| NJIT Professor of Physics Recognized for Research |

NEWARK, Oct. 14
John Federici, PhD, a professor in the physics department at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), received NJIT’s most prestigious research award during university convocation.
Federici, of Westfield, was given the Harlan J. Perlis Award for Research for his role at NJIT in advancing research and scientific investigation. The award is named after a late NJIT professor who was also an outstanding researcher.
“We honor John Federici with this award because he personifies the integration of research, instruction, economic development and public service that are this university’s core mission elements,” said Donald Sebastian, PhD, vice president for research and development at NJIT. “Always one of NJIT’s top performers in attracting external support, Federici has successfully connected scholarly work in physics to important and practical applications.”
Since joining NJIT in 1992 as an assistant professor, added Sebastian, Federici has been a principal investigator, or co-principal investigator, on more than 25 grants and he has received more than $4 million in sponsored-research awards.
Federici’s research spans discovery of infrared photo-induced superconductivity and localized energy states in nano-tubes and nano-particulates, to on-line semiconductor- process monitoring as well as advanced spectroscopic imaging technologies. His research has resulted in his having published 40 papers in peer reviewed journals and countless conference proceedings. His research has also supported and fueled the research of 15 NJIT graduate students.
Some of Federici’s graduate students have already gone on to make their mark in their fields: One is a researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratories; another is a distinguished member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories; and another is a tenure-track faculty member at Seton Hall University.
“Showing that scholarship can also have tangible applications, Federici is also an inventor on six patents, either granted or pending, all of which derived from his research,” said Sebastian. “That is why the university takes pleasure in awarding Professor Federici its most distinguished research award.”
