Altenkirch Opens Annual Puerto Rican Summit Held at NJIT
NEWARK, Oct. 18

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), which boasts one of the nation’s most diverse student bodies, hosted the Second Annual Boricua Agenda Summit this past weekend.  The event celebrated the Puerto Rican community in New Jersey and the nation.  NJIT President Robert A. Altenkirch, PhD provided opening remarks.  His speech touched upon the plurality of the NJIT community which US News and World Report continually ranks within the top 15 in the nation for diversity.

“It is a privilege to host the Boricua Agenda Summit at NJIT, a university whose exceptionally diverse student body exemplifies the richness and strength of a society rooted in many different cultures,” said Altenkirch.

New Jersey gubernatorial candidates Senator Jon Corzine and businessman Doug Forrester attended and discussed their respective education plans, property taxes, bringing more jobs to New Jersey and health care improvements. Rep. Robert Menendez reminded everyone to vote.  Clarisa Gonzalez-Lenahan, associate director of graduate studies at NJIT, helped organize the event.

NJIT has had a long and productive relationship with the Puerto Rican community. Most recently representatives of NJIT and the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR), as well as the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez (UPR-Mayaguez), brainstormed how to improve funding and academics.

Opportunities discussed included the creation of joint undergraduate research experiences in math and science through grant proposals to the National Science Foundation (NSF) and/or National Institutes of Health (NIH).  Also mentioned were creating a graduate certificate and/or master’s degree in pharmaceutical engineering at PUPR, organizing joint training programs for pharmaceutical companies in Puerto Rico, collaborative doctoral programs, exchanges between pre-college and college students and/or faculty and researchers, plus more.
New Jersey Institute of Technology, the state's public technological research university, enrolls more than 8,200 students in bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in 100 degree programs offered by six colleges: Newark College of Engineering, New Jersey School of Architecture, College of Science and Liberal Arts, School of Management, Albert Dorman Honors College and College of Computing Sciences. NJIT is renowned for expertise in architecture, applied mathematics, wireless communications and networking, solar physics, advanced engineered particulate materials, nanotechnology, neural engineering and eLearning.
