NEWARK, Sept. 13, 2006

Filippo Posta, a doctoral student in the department of mathematical sciences at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), received at NJIT’s annual awards convocation today, a special honor for his work as a teaching assistant.

Posta, of New York City, a doctoral candidate in applied math, hopes to finish his thesis in time to graduate in May of 2007.  Posta received his BS in math and computer science from the Universita' di Siena, Italy, and his MS in computational biology from NJIT. Mathematical biology is his research interest.

His research focuses on the modeling of transmissions of chemical signals in epithelial layers. Posta believes his research may lead to publishing a commercial software program. She is also collaborating with another professor on the “Eco-Tool” project (www.eco-tools.net).  His role is to create a multi-dimensional scaling algorithm. Other research interests include genomics and sabermetrics, the statistical study of baseball.
