The mission of the Historic Preservation research
team is to develop methodologies, products and procedures that
enhance the preservation of historic buildings and structures.
Established in 1993, the team initially focused on developing
a methodology for decision-makers to assess the value of preserving
existing buildings as compared to the demolition and fabrication
of new buildings.
In 2000, the team entered into a partnership with
the New York City Department of Education and the World Monuments
Fund for a groundbreaking new project: to develop a four-year,
interdisciplinary Preservation Arts academic curriculum for
the new Brooklyn High School of the Arts (see
Preservation High School Development Paper). The goal of
the project is to train students who will enter the preservation
trades or go on to higher education. The academic component
of the curriculum includes traditional academic subjects that
are infused with and taught from the perspective of historic
preservation. The hands-on, practical training component is
based upon a unique Preservation Arts Technology program developed
by the CABSR research team.
A primary goal for the project is to create a
national model for similar programs in other parts of the country.
