Joel S. Bloom, Ed.D, vice president for academic and student services at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), oversees the university’s center for pre-college learning. For 30 years, NJIT has prepared students as young as fourth grade for a college education in science, engineering, mathematics or technology. Most of the NJIT pre-college programs are geared towards minorities and women, who are underrepresented in engineering and other professions. Bloom’s background in pre-college education includes his current work at NJIT as well as time he spent at the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE). While there, he served as assistant commissioner in the division of general academic education. He managed competency testing, curriculum content standards, pre-school programs and the establishment of 17 effective model schools. Before that, Bloom managed a unit for the northeast educational improvement center of the U. S. Department of Education. Since his arrival at NJIT in 1990, Bloom has overseen pre-college programs, enrollment management, continuing professional education and career development services. Freshman studies, the educational opportunity program, library services, physical education and athletics also have come under his purview. In 1997, Bloom was appointed the first dean of the Albert Dorman Honors College at NJIT. The honors college enrolls 400 students generally have higher SAT scores than other NJIT students and are in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating classes. Bloom donates time to educational organizations. He chairs the New Jersey College Bound Advisory Board and the Greater Newark Consortium Board for Pre-College Education. He belongs to the New Jersey Board for Communities and Schools, the New Jersey Presidents' Council Task Force on Transfer and Mission Differentiation, the board of the Philadelphia Alliance for Minority Participation, and the board of the New Jersey Association of Partners in Education.
Bloom holds a master’s degree and a doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia
University, and he also holds a master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree from
Hunter College of the City University, New York City. NJIT is a public, scientific and technological research university enrolling
more than 8,800 students. The university offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees to students
in 80 degree programs throughout its six colleges: Newark College of Engineering, New Jersey School
of Architecture, College of Science and Liberal Arts, School of Management, Albert Dorman Honors
College and College of Computing Sciences. The division of continuing professional education offers
adults eLearning, off campus degrees and short courses. Expertise and research initiatives include
architecture and building science, applied mathematics, biomedical engineering, environmental
engineering and science, information technology, manufacturing, materials, microelectronics,
multimedia, telecommunications, transportation and solar astrophysics. Yahoo! Internet
Life magazine cites NJIT as a "perennially most wired" university.
