The Honors College will use the $100,000 grant to buy hardware and software, as well as to equip the lab with a communication infrastructure. "This award will help increase the pool of student talent by ensuring that research is the culminating experience for information technology honor students at NJIT," says David Reibstein, Ph.D., associate dean for the Honors College. "Involvement in research is motivating, integrating and broadens the academic experience for students," he says. Reibstein said the laboratory is part of the university's intention to have honor students either do a thesis in information technology or perform a project with high-tech firms such as Lucent. "Lucent has thrived on fostering innovation within our corporation," says Don Gamble, Lucent's director of University Relations. "We see this grant as a great opportunity to expose students to research and encourage innovation. Lucent remains committed to supporting higher education and this grant is part of its investment in our future business leaders." The Lucent award augments a previous $2.5 million grant to NJIT from the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education dedicated to the development of the information technology workforce. Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, designs and delivers networks for the world's largest communications service providers. NJIT is a public, scientific and technological research university enrolling
more than 8,800 students. The university offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees to students
in 80 degree programs throughout its six colleges: Newark College of Engineering, New Jersey School
of Architecture, College of Science and Liberal Arts, School of Management, Albert Dorman Honors
College and College of Computing Sciences. The division of continuing professional education offers
adults eLearning, off campus degrees and short courses. Expertise and research initiatives include
architecture and building science, applied mathematics, biomedical engineering, environmental
engineering and science, information technology, manufacturing, materials, microelectronics,
multimedia, telecommunications, transportation and solar astrophysics. Yahoo! Internet
Life magazine cites NJIT as a "perennially most wired" university.
