NJIT Women's History Month Features Leadership Advice, Beauty Tips, Art Exhibits, Talks and More


NEWARK, Feb. 18--Fox 5 television news reporter Cheryl Washington kicks off the women's history month celebrations at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). More headliners throughout the month include a discussion with married couples about balancing family and career and a talk by Cooper Union Dean Eleanor Baum about women in leadership. Baum is one of only a handful of women in the United States who is a dean of an engineering school.

The theme for this year's women's history month at NJIT is women sustaining the American spirit.

All programs indicated below take place on the NJIT campus, 323 MLK Blvd. For more information call 973-596-4671. All programs are free unless fees are indicated. The programs are part of a larger Women's History Month series presented jointly with Essex County College, and Rutgers-Newark University.   • Cheryl Washington speaks Monday, March 4, 11:30 a.m. in the Hazell Center Ballroom.

  • Dressing For Success is the focus of a workshop, "Professional Business Savvy in Dress and Etiquette presented by Rolan Resources Image Communications, March 6, 2:30 p.m., Room 219, Hazell Center.

  • Paintings by Mina Robertson of Piscataway who is known for her focus on Native Americans, African Americans and landscapes opens March 4, 5-7 p.m., Hazell Center Gallery. The show runs through March 29.

  • "Hi Tech Tunes and Trouble 2002" an original musical runs March 7-10: Friday - Saturday: 6:45 p.m.; Saturday - Sunday: 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for NJIT students and seniors, $7 for general admission, Kupfrian Hall Theatre.

  • Annual Lillian Gilbreth Colloquium: Eleanor Baum, Ph.D., Cooper Union Dean of Engineering, Cooper Union. The lecture will be held March 11, 11:30a.m. -1 p.m., Weston Hall, Lecture Room 1.

  • 2002 Women in Technology Leadership Awards Banquet, will be held March 11, 5 p.m. Hazell Center Ballroom. Annual awards dinner celebrates the work of outstanding young female high school students from New Jersey and the surrounding area. Also focuses on the research interests and personal experiences of women faculty members at NJIT.

  • Beauty Basics 202 is set for March 13, 9 p.m., Cypress Hall Lounge.

  • Latin Pub Night will be held March 14, 9 p.m., The Pub.

  • Self Defense Workshop will be held March 25, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Hazell Center Lounge.

  • Society of Women Engineers Bake Sale, March 24, 10 a.m.-2 p. m., Hazell Lounge, 1st Floor.

  • Spring Workshop: "How to Balance Family and Career," March 26, noon-2 p.m., Hazell Center Ballroom.

  • A Stranger's Song 2002, the closing ceremony, is set for March 27, 2:30 p.m. Hazell Center Gallery, 2nd floor. The ceremony features a poetry and play reading and reception with readings of 20th century poems, prose and dramatic excerpts about 21st century's goals for women. Music to accompany the text.
  • Closing celebration featuring Amy Ward Band, March 27, 9 p.m.- 1 a.m. The Pub.
