"Please join me in wishing Murray well as the first holder of the Hurlburt professorship," says William Van Buskirk, Ph.D., the provost of NJIT. "His longstanding involvement with the school of management, as well as his extensive experience in the field of information systems, makes him the ideal holder of the Hurlburt professorship." W. Frank Hurlburt, Jr., a 1935 NJIT graduate, received the NJIT Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1998. Hurlburt was honored because of his outstanding professional career that included serving as chairman and chief executive officer of Automatic Switch Company, known now as ASCO, and still located in Florham Park. The company is now a division of Emerson Electric. Hurlburt, who built up the company with his father, the late W.F. Hurlburt, Sr. during the depression and while a student at NJIT, retired in 1978. He had been president since 1951. "One day, Frank and his wife Jean called me and said they wanted to make a million dollar donation to the university," recalls NJIT President Saul K. Fenster. "I think the Hurlburts did this because Frank always appreciated the value of his education at NJIT. Frank and Jean Hurlburt are friends of many years. They are sensitive and caring and feel strongly about giving back." The Hurlburts reside in the Florida Keys and North Carolina. Turoff will build a stronger collaboration between the College of Computing Sciences and the School of Management enhancing the synergy that already exists. He will also assist in the recruitment and staffing of faculty dedicated to the MIS program. An active researcher, Turoff has authored or co-authored numerous books and book chapters and over 100 refereed journal articles and refereed conference proceeding papers. He is also a member of the American Society for Information Science, the Association for Information Systems, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the Institute of Management Sciences. Turoff, received the B.A. degree in mathematics and physics from the University of California at Berkeley and his Ph.D. in physics from Brandeis University. He has been a member of the NJIT faculty since 1973. In addition to Turoff's responsibilities as chair of the department of information systems, Turoff holds a joint appointment with the NJIT School of Management and is a member of the faculty of the Rutgers Graduate School of Management and the program director for the computer information system concentration in the Rutgers Ph.D. management program. NJIT is a public, scientific and technological research university enrolling
more than 8,800 students. The university offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees to students
in 80 degree programs throughout its six colleges: Newark College of Engineering, New Jersey School
