To make Franek's list, the university or college had to be public and cost $15,000 a year or less for in-state tuition and room and board. "Challenging professors, a focused curriculum, and lots of hard work are all attributes of NJIT," Franek wrote. "And let's not forget that it's [NJIT's] near bustling New York City. NJIT is a great tech school, offering programs in engineering, architecture, management, as well as the arts and sciences." Franek also touts the school's diversity. This past year, NJIT ranked seven out of more than 225 universities around the nation for diversity, according to the most recent best colleges issue of U.S. News & World Report. Asian Americans represent the largest minority group--24 percent of the university's enrollment. Black and Hispanic engineering groups have long honored NJIT for its commitment to helping black, Hispanic and other minority group members achieve an education in engineering and technology. The most recent ranking of the journal Black Issues in Higher Education, ranks NJIT ranks 16th in the U.S. and first in New Jersey for graduating minority students with engineering degrees. The poll also ranked NJIT 11th in the U.S., and first in New Jersey, for graduating African American students and 19th in the U.S. and first in New Jersey for graduating Hispanic students with baccalaureates in engineering-related technologies. NJIT is a public, scientific and technological research university enrolling
more than 8,800 students. The university offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees to students
in 80 degree programs throughout its six colleges: Newark College of Engineering, New Jersey School
of Architecture, College of Science and Liberal Arts, School of Management, Albert Dorman Honors
College and College of Computing Sciences. The division of continuing professional education offers
adults eLearning, off campus degrees and short courses. Expertise and research initiatives include
architecture and building science, applied mathematics, biomedical engineering, environmental
engineering and science, information technology, manufacturing, materials, microelectronics,
multimedia, telecommunications, transportation and solar astrophysics. Yahoo! Internet
Life magazine cites NJIT as a "perennially most wired" university.
