NJIT Students Rehab House in Newark's South Ward
WHAT: : Students studying engineering technology at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will help rebuild one of 10 houses in Newark's South Ward this coming weekend. The project is sponsored by Rebuilding Together, a national organization devoted to organizing volunteers to rehab houses in urban centers. NJIT students have been working as general contractors on the project, organizing the tradesmen. This weekend, the NJIT students will also replace windows.
WHO: NJIT Assistant Professor of Construction Engineering Technology John A. Wiggins will lead the students. Other groups involved in the project are the New Jersey chapter of Rebuilding Together, the Building Council of New Jersey, Edison (732-225-2265) which has brought on board the Essex County Building & Construction Trades Council, Prudential Financial and Public Service Electric & Gas.
WHY: "The idea was to get students out of the classroom, into a place where they could work with carpenters, plumbers and electricians," says Wiggins. "When my students graduate they become building contractors, so working now and interfacing with those professionals is really helpful. Incidentally, tradesmen from all the unions will also be donating their time to rehab this house."
WHEN: Saturday-Sunday, April 27-28, 2002, beginning at 9 a.m.
