New Jersey Institute of Technology Names High Performance Building Expert To Head Architecture Research Center

NEWARK, July 2- Deane Evans, a registered architect and Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), has been appointed research professor and executive director of the Center for Architecture and Building Science Research at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).

Evans, who has had experience in both private practice and the federal government, has dedicated his career to creating innovative ways to improve the built environment - through better design, through the development and use of better technology, and through the creation and dissemination of new knowledge. His current focus is on high performance, sustainable buildings, particularly housing and schools. He has authored two widely used educational guides for architects and their clients: The Affordable Housing Design Advisor ( and The High Performance School Buildings Resource & Strategy Guide. The Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) published the school guide. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) sponsored and published the Design Advisor.

Evans has worked in the area of high performance buildings for, among others, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Gas Research Institute, the National Institute of Building Sciences, the National Science Foundation, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

Evans comes to NJIT from private practice. Prior to that, he served for one year as the founding director of the Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH), a program to accelerate the use of new technologies in housing, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Preceding his appointment as PATH director, he was vice president for research at the American Institute of Architects in Washington, D.C

Evans says he is pleased to accept the appointment. "The Center has a very well-established track record in research, and the university has superb technical resources," Evans says. "That combination makes NJIT an ideal place to generate new knowledge and innovation in building performance. We all live and work and go to school in buildings. Unfortunately, most of them fail to achieve the performance levels - in terms of comfort, efficiency, sustainability and productivity - that they're capable of. At the Center we're trying to change that through a program of practical, applied R&D. The goal of our efforts is to provide real, tangible benefits to building designers, developers and, ultimately, to building occupants throughout the State of New Jersey and across the U.S."

Evans is the co-author of the Passive Solar Construction Handbook (1983), published by Rodale Press, an Energy Efficient Lighting Design and Maintenance Manual for the New York State Energy Office, and Affordable Manufactured Housing through Energy Conservation (1984), for the U.S. Department of Energy. He is also the editor of the AIA's 'Buildings at Risk' series of self-study publications for architects: Flood Resistant Design, Seismic Design, Wind Design and Multi-Hazard Design.

Evans managed a project for the U.S. Federal Transit Administration to promote the role of transit-related development in creating livable communities. In cooperation with the National Easter Seal Society and Century 21 Real Estate he conducted the "Easy Access Housing" awards program to recognize high quality housing for those with disabilities. For the National Institute of Justice he organized and convened a national conference titled, "Secure and Livable Communities: Crime Prevention through Environmental Design."

Evans has also participated in projects for Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he prepared a manual of energy-saving technologies for commercial buildings, and for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, where he developed a curriculum for teaching photovoltaics in buildings in architecture schools. He is the vice chair of the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council in Washington, DC.

Evans has a bachelor's degree from Yale University and a master's degree in architecture from Columbia University. His research work has been widely recognized, including two Citations and a First Award for Research from Progressive Architecture magazine he and his wife, Layne, are moving soon to Maplewood.

SOA is one of the largest degree accredited architecture schools in the United States granting both bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture.
