Ethan James, an NJIT graduate student and native of Antigua, organized the book drive through his international non-profit firm, Global Education Mission. James, former senior director of strategy and planning at Court TV, formed this firm to enhance the educational standards in developing countries. It was the second book drive organized by James at NJIT. Last June, the university sent 18 boxes, filled with 1,000 books, to help Antigua and Barbuda. NJIT also plans to donate used personal computers to modernize the island’s schools, only 10% of whose primary schools have computers. The island’s library system, moreover, was damaged by a hurricane. “The only way developing nations can achieve and maintain meaningful sovereignty and stable economies,” James said, as he loaded boxes of books onto a rental truck at NJIT, “is through the education of their people. And by extending the life of commodities we already have, we reduce the demand for newer ones. This speaks volumes to the sustainable use of our natural resources and speaks out against prodigality.” His efforts to help have not gone unnoticed. “Ethan’s effort to help the students, schools and libraries is greatly appreciated,” said Glentis T. Thomas, attaché for the Government of Antigua and Barbuda. “We are rebuilding our public library, and we’re just now beginning to computerize our schools. The donations Ethan organizes are an immense help.” NJIT is a public, scientific and technological research university enrolling
more than 8,800 students. The university offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees to students
in 80 degree programs throughout its six colleges: Newark College of Engineering, New Jersey School
of Architecture, College of Science and Liberal Arts, School of Management, Albert Dorman Honors
College and College of Computing Sciences. The division of continuing professional education offers
adults eLearning, off campus degrees and short courses. Expertise and research initiatives include
architecture and building science, applied mathematics, biomedical engineering, environmental
engineering and science, information technology, manufacturing, materials, microelectronics,
multimedia, telecommunications, transportation and solar astrophysics. Yahoo! Internet
Life magazine cites NJIT as a "perennially most wired" university.
