Gabriel Caprio Appointed to New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Board of Overseers


NEWARK, October 18-- Gabriel P. Caprio, president and chief executive officer of Amalgamated Bank, was recently appointed to New Jersey Institute of Technology’s (NJIT) Board of Overseers.

The NJIT Board of Overseers is composed of senior executives, CEOs and entrepreneurs. Board members provide a broad range of advocacy for and support to NJIT, both corporate and personal. Beyond creating a connection between the university and the corporation, some overseers have demonstrated their personal commitment by creating scholarships to honor loved ones. These businessmen and women also serve as professional advisors, supplying expertise in a multitude of areas including marketing and strategic planning.

Caprio, of Glen Ridge, previously served as Amalgamated Bank's executive vice president and chief financial officer. Amalgamated Bank is based in New York City.

Immediately prior to joining Amalgamated, Caprio served as vice president of finance for Oxford Research International Corp. He was employed at Chase Manhattan Bank for nine years, where he was responsible for expanding the bank's operations and systems in South America, the Caribbean and Canada.

Prior to joining Chase, Caprio was employed at Chemical Bank and Citibank, where he was responsible for letter of credit operations and various departments involved with computer operations and check processing.

Caprio served as an officer of the U.S. Navy, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. During this period he served aboard ships in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Caribbean and as an adviser to a Vietnamese Navy river assault group in the Mekong Delta. His last tour was in the Office of the Secretary of Defense in Washington, D.C.

Caprio serves as vice chairman of the New York Banker’s Association and as chairman of the Banker Advisory Board of the Conference of State Bank Supervisors. He is also a member of the advisory board of Neighborhood Housing Services of New York; a member of the advisory board of NJIT’s School of Management, and a director of both the National Cooperative Business Association and the National Association on Drug Abuse Problems.

Caprio has a bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University and a master’s degree in business administration from New York University.
