The scholarships, which totaled nearly $75,000, were awarded to New Jersey civil engineering and construction technology students who completed internships in the construction industry. The scholarship program is open to New Jersey college juniors and seniors who participate in their school’s construction education program. “The CIAP internship program provides our students with an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand experience in an engineering or construction company,” said John Schuring, Ph.D., chair of the department of civil and environmental engineering at NJIT. Robert English, chair of the engineering technology department at NJIT, echoed Schuring’s comment: “CIAP allows students to gain valuable field experience,” he said. The students all worked in the construction field, taking estimates, reviewing drawings as well as inspecting and testing completed work. NJIT scholarship winners, who are majoring in civil and environmental engineering, include Hubert Estela and Gilda Michel of Newark; Leroy Bishop, Hillside; Crystal Cooper, Rockaway. Others are Brian Cooper, East Brunswick; Jean Go, Belleville; Pablo Lemus, Union City; Donald Luxama, Union; Bethzayda Rivera, Jersey City and Dianne Spinelli of Staten Island, N.Y. Two students majoring in construction engineering technology are Christian Sammarco, Woodbridge, and Daniel Wolaniuk, Little Egg Harbor. Participating contractors, consultants and public owners for CIAP include Anselmi & DeCicco, Inc., Maplewood; Bovis Lend Lease, Princeton; Conti Enterprises, South Plainfield; Earle Asphalt, Farmingdale; George Harms Construction Company, Inc., Howell; J. Fletcher Creamer & Son, Inc., Hackensack; Perini Corporation, Atlantic City; Prismatic Development Corporation, Fairfield; RCC Fabricators, Inc., Paterson; APG- American Industry, Glassboro; Consulting Engineer Services, Sewell; The Delaware River and Bay Authority, New Castle, Del.; Epic, Inc., Piscataway; Hudson County Engineering Division, Jersey City; M.J. Construction Industry Advancement Program of New Jersey is a non-profit trusteeship founded by the New Jersey Asphalt Pavement Association, Utility and Transportation Contractors Association of New Jersey, and the Associated General Contractors of New Jersey. It provides construction education, scholarships, and research as well as improvement and standardization of public-sector contracts for the state’s construction industry. NJIT is a public, scientific and technological research university enrolling
