NEWARK, April 21--David Kristol, Ph.D., professor of biomedical engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), recently received the Newark College of Engineering (NCE) Outstanding Advisor Award, given annually to a professor whose advising has had an immense and positive impact on students. Kristol, of Aberdeen, received the award at the NCE awards banquet. Upon presenting Kristol with the award, William Van Buskirk, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, said, “Kristol’s commitment to students and his untiring work to see that they are steered onto successful educational paths has become legendary.” Kristol has worked at NJIT for 37 years, Van Buskirk added, all the while focusing his energy on the students. More recently, Kristol helped to form the biomedical engineering department at NJIT. “He is known as the godfather of the biomedical department,” Van Buskirk quipped. And in the broader context of NCE and NJIT, Kristol has also served students with conviction. He has been the long-standing director of NCE’s engineering science undergraduate program. He is also the academic advisor for NJIT students who participate in the accelerated medical and dental degree programs that NJIT offers jointly with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). Kristol is the founder of these joint-degree programs between NJIT and UMDNJ. “Kristol tells all of the students he advises,” Van Buskirk noted, that ‘when I see you walking around campus, I hope to see a smile on your face.’ And if he doesn’t see a student smiling, he usually stops to inquire ‘what’s up?’ He is richly deserving of the Outstanding Advisor Award.” Kristol received his bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College and a master’s and a doctorate from New York University. NJIT is a public, scientific and technological research university enrolling
more than 8,800 students. The university offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees to students
in 80 degree programs throughout its six colleges: Newark College of Engineering, New Jersey School
