NEWARK, May 10- Mengchu Zhou, Ph.D., a professor of electrical and computer engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology, was recently honored by the New Jersey-based Asian American Heritage Council for his work in public service and government. In 1999, Zhou, of Parsippany, served as president of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology-USA, headquartered in New York City. The award is part of the council’s 9th Asian American Heritage Month celebration.

“I am very pleased to receive the distinguished Asian American award,” says Zhou. “My own hard work and countless help from my colleagues and friends enabled me to win this award.”
This past year, Zhou also received a Humboldt Research Award for senior scientists in the U.S. The Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation annually grants up to 150 of these awards to outstanding scholars residing outside of Germany.

Leading German scholars or research institutions nominate candidates for the honor. Direct applications are not accepted. Only full professors or associate professors at universities as well as scholars of equivalent academic standing, working at institutions other than universities, may be nominated. There are no restrictions regarding disciplines or countries.

Zhou received his Ph.D. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York; his master’s degree from Beijing Institute of Technology and his bachelor’s degree from Nanjing University of Science and Technology. His research interests focus on computer-integrated systems, embedded control software, intelligent manufacturing automation, Petri nets, computer network and security, lifecycle engineering design, and discrete event simulation. Zhou has published several books and over 150 technical articles.

Alexander Von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a nature researcher, explorer, and scientist whose lengthy Latin American journey from 1799 to 1804 was celebrated as the second scientific discovery of South America. The foundation was established in Berlin in 1860. More than 20,000 scholars from 125 countries have been sponsored to date.
