New York, NY -- Yahoo! Internet Life, the nation's pre-eminent Web magazine, has named New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) #2 in its second annual survey of "America's 100 Most Wired Colleges." The magazine surveyed colleges and universities across the nation to find out which schools provide the most access and exposure to the Internet. The results will appear in Yahoo! Internet Life's May issue.
Yahoo! Internet Life based its survey on 22 factors organized under four main categories--general services, academics, social life, and computer statistics--to determine each school's ranking.
NJIT is link heaven: Distance-learning students participate in one-third of all NJIT courses. A whopping 100% of NJIT's students own their own computer and 60% of classes offer materials online. NJIT is impressive outside the classroom as well, sponsoring campus-specific usenet groups, an online gaming network, and an electronic message board for students to find home-to-campus ride shares.
"We were amazed at the overwhelming response to last year's survey results," says Publisher Jim Spanfeller. "We could never have imagined the impact it would have. As a direct result, many schools implemented Internet programs on campus, while still others accelerated wiring that already existed." Today 100% of the nation's colleges and universities surveyed offer students e-mail accounts and Web access.
"We are delighted with our Yahoo! Internet Life ranking. The results of the survey help us benchmark our progress as a university," said NJIT President Saul K. Fenster. "Computing is an integral part of our culture. Students want to work in an environment that maximizes connectivity and access to the universe of resources available on the Internet. NJIT wants to lead the way in applying technology to higher education."
The survey included more than 400 colleges and universities identified as being highly selective (profiled in Peterson's Competitive Colleges 1997-98), state universities with student populations greater than 15,000, and institutions represented in last year's Top 100 List.
To strengthen the research and deepen the database this year, Yahoo! Internet Life partnered with Peterson's, publisher of the nation's premier college guidebooks. A complete list of "America's 100 Most Wired Colleges" can be found in the May issue of Yahoo! Internet Life, on newsstands April 14.
