University Mourns Loss Of Longtime Professor

The university community mourns the loss of Dr. Ronald Gautreau, 60, professor of physics, who died Monday, June 12, in Newark Beth Israel Medical Center after suffering a massive heart attack.

Dr. Gautreau taught physics at NJIT for the past 34 years. Dr. Gautreau received an associate’s degree from Wilkes College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., a bachelor’s degree from Lehigh University, Lehigh, Pa., and a master’s degree and Ph.D., both from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken.

Dr. Gautreau was a member of the New York Academy of Science, the American Physical Society and Sigma Xi. He co-authored two physics books, “Schaum’s Outline,” and a study guide, “Accompany Physics for Scientists and Engineers.”

A well-known trombone player, Dr. Gautreau performed with the Big and Express, the Reeds Rhythm and All that Brass, and also with the Shad Royfle Band.

Born in Newark, he moved to Rahway 30 years ago. Surviving are Joan, his wife of 38 years; three sons, Ronald T. Jr., Gregory and Lloyd; and a daughter, Denise.

The family is requesting, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Educational Opportunity Program Scholarship at NJIT. Make checks payable to the NJIT Foundation and forward to the Office for University Advancement.
