NJIT @ Mount Laurel Campus Happenings

Summer Pre-College Program Huge Success

Twenty-four teen-agers from as far away as Hartford, Conn. attended the second annual Senior FEMME summer camp at the NJIT @ Mount Laurel campus. The program designed to encourage seventh- and eighth-grade girls to explore technology, math and science-related careers, was a huge success.

The girls learned C++, built a radio from electronic schematics, developed and maintained their own Web page, completed a computer literacy curriculum and solved a variety of math-related problems while learning to utilize a TI 83+ calculator.

The campers also toured local industry and relaxed during daylong trips to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, Dorney Park and the Franklin Institute.

Other highlights of the summer included Maxine Ballon, president of the New Jersey Technology Council, as the keynote speaker at the closing program. New Jersey Network taped the program for future broadcast.

Student Awarded Gates Millenium Scholarship

A junior majoring in information systems at the NJIT @ Mount Laurel campus received one of the first GatesMillenium Scholarships. Michelle Phillips was one of 2,000 students from more than 60,000 applications from around the country to be awarded the scholarships, which are funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the United Negro College Fund, Inc. Phillips has been accepted to the BS/MS program with a goal to complete doctoral studies at NJIT.

Campus Enrollment Continues To Grow

NJIT @ Mount Laurel continues to grow with the enrollment of 34 new first-time, full-time freshmen students to the campus beginning this fall. Of particular note, nearly 25 percent of the new students are members of the Albert Dorman Honors College. Raghu Bollini, dean at the NJIT @ Mount Laurel campus, will serve as the Honors students’ academic advisor. This is the third consecutive year that enrollment has increased. Much of the credit for this increase is due to the efforts
of Kathy Bradley, admissions representative at the NJIT @ Mount Laurel campus.
