Sports UpdateBaseball Team Finishes Florida Trip The NJIT baseball team finished 4-3 on its recent spring break trip to Fort Myers and Cape Coral, Fla. In the process, the Highlanders matched their victory total for all of last season, when they finished 4-34. NJIT is now 4-6 overall in 2001. First-year head coach Brian Callahan recorded his first career victory when NJIT stopped Malone College, 11-7, March 10. Freshman Chris Schwartz had the Highlanders hottest bat, hitting 17-for-29, with a .586 average in NJIT's seven Florida games. He had four doubles, a triple, two home runs and 14 runs batted in. Schwartz also was the winning pitcher in a victory during the week, throwing six and 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and no walks in a start against New Jersey City State University. Freshman catcher Cole Cicatelli was 8-for-20, with a .400 average, two homers, seven runs scored and seven runs batted in. For More, Click: http://www.njit.edu/Directory/Academic/Phys_Ed/fall_99/bsball/bsblhome.html Highlanders Lose In Tournament Semifinals The NJIT men's basketball team lost to the College of St. Rose, 62-58, in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II semifinals, Saturday, March 10, on the campus of Long Island University-C.W. Post, in Brookville, N.Y. The Highlanders, playing in the tournament for the second time in three years, finished the season with a record of 14-14. NJIT led, 24-11, with 7:36 left in the first half and, 28-21, at halftime. The Golden Knights took their first lead, 42-41, with 9:33 to play in the game, but the Highlanders fought back to take a 53-50 lead at the 4:27 mark. St. Rose then scored five consecutive points to take the final lead. NJIT freshman Demond Cowins scored a game-high 21 points with eight rebounds. St. Rose went on to win the tournament with a victory against the host Pioneers, Sunday, March 11. C.W. Post had defeated New York Tech in the other semifinal. For More, Click: http://www.njit.edu/Directory/Academic/Phys_Ed/fall_99/mbkball/mbkbhome.html Tough Spring Break For Highlanders The NJIT men's volleyball team lost two matches on its spring break trip to Ohio, last week, falling, 3-0, to Ohio State University, Sunday, March 11, and, 3-0, to Findlay University, Monday, March 12, in nonconference play. The Highlanders (2-13) were out-hit in both matches. The Buckeyes, ranked 14th nationally, hit .432 percent with 52 kills to .157 percent and 33 kills for NJIT. Senior Fernando Fuentes led NJIT with 10 kills. Against Findlay, the Highlanders had 25 attack errors and hit for just .091 percent, while allowing the host team to hit .383 percent with 51 kills. Fuentes and Kelvin Colon each had 11 kills and seven digs.
