Dartmouth: Welcome To NJIT

NJIT will play host, for the third consecutive year, to 10 interns from Dartmouth College who will work at the Boys and Girls Clubs, in Newark, N.J.

The Urban Summer Internship Program, made possible through a multi-year grant from the Allen and Joan Bildner Endowment for Human and Intergroup Relations, is a leave term off-campus opportunity offered by the Tucker Foundation to engage Dartmouth students with multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and multi-income urban communities by working with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Newark in personal and educational development, cultural enrichment and social recreation.

Dartmouth students play a role in youth leadership and development while providing work experience in a non-profit educational agency. The Urban Summer Internship Program contributes to the mission of Dartmouth College, which includes the "rich and long tradition in liberal arts learning, which recognizes that education is a continuum that extends beyond the four walls of the classroom." The Boys and Girls Clubs of America inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

Interns work in the three clubs located across Newark, teachings such programs as "Smart Moves," a drug, alcohol and premature sexual activity prevention/education initiative; "Ultimate Journey," an environmental education and sensitivity training activity; "Smart Girls," a heath, fitness and self-esteem enhancement effort; and "World Of Difference," an anti-bias curriculum developed by the Anti-Defamation League to explore prejudice and bigotry, improve critical thinking skills, examine diverse viewpoints and take leadership roles. Interns also develop and lead educational and recreational field trips around New Jersey and New York.

The Dartmouth students are housed at NJIT, where, when not working at the clubs, they take advantage of NJIT facilities including the library, computer labs and gymnasium. They also use common and recreational space in the residence halls to conduct weekly community dinners and reflection sessions, occasionally inviting Newark community leaders to join them.
