Men’s Soccer (1-4): After picking up its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory Tuesday, Sept. 18, the NJIT men’s soccer team lost both of its games in the Kiwanis-East Stroudsburg University Classic during the weekend. The Highlanders fell to Concordia (N.Y.) College, 2-0, Saturday, Sept. 22, and the University of Bridgeport, 3-1, Sunday, Sept. 23.

Earlier in the week, NJIT evened its CACC record at 1-1 with a 4-0 home victory against Bloomfield College. The Highlanders received two goals from junior Brent McKim and three assists from sophomore Cherno Cham. Sophomore goalkeeper Jason Manzi made nine saves for his first shutout of the season. Manzi is averaging nine saves per game with a 1.70 goals-against average.

Junior transfer Christopher Wilson leads NJIT in scoring through five games, with three of his team’s six goals.

Women’s Soccer (3-2): For the first time in its six-year program history, the NJIT women’s soccer team won back-to-back games. The Highlanders defeated Division III Philadelphia Biblical University, 5-2, Monday, Sept. 17, before winning their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener, 2-0, at Bloomfield College, Wednesday, Sept. 19. NJIT was left with a 2-1 record last week after falling to Teikyo Post University, 8-0, Saturday, Sept. 22.

In the two victories, sophomore midfielder Daisy Calderon became the first Highlander to score goals in consecutive games. Calderon had the game-winning goal against Bloomfield with a 30-yard chip late in the first half. The Highlanders have already matched school seasonal records, set last year, for victories with three and goals with 14.

The dynamic freshman tandem of Cathy Wasko and Karina Merchan has paced the NJIT offense. Wasko leads the team in scoring with 15 points on six goals and three assists. Merchan, a transfer from Pennsylvania State University, has three goals and a team-high four assists.

Women’s Volleyball (0-5): After two postponements, the women’s volleyball season finally got underway with a busy week of matches. NJIT lost five times by 3-0 scores, including an 0-4 record in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.

“We are moving in the right direction,” said first-year head coach Anthony Valbrun, who inherited an 0-16 team from a year ago. “If we can keep up the level of intensity in practice, which we have shown recently, we will be competitive with a lot of teams before the end of the season.”

One bright spot has been the play of freshman middle blocker Marta Oporska. After missing the first two matches due to a shoulder injury, Oporska averaged 2.11 kills and 0.67 blocks per game in weekend losses to Nyack College, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, and Teikyo Post.
