When New York’s World Trade Center was planned in the early 1970s, some of the trickiest problems were to get water flowing 110 floors up; how to turn water pressure at an elevation of 1,350 feet to 9 square-feet of office space; and how to deal with a new demand on New York’s already overtaxed water supply that would equal the needs of another small city.

Alumnus Victor Cantlupe, ’30, was the man called upon to solve these problems. An expert in hydraulic design, Cantlupe had spent the better of four decades inventing and developing mechanisms for projects, including fountain displays at Rockefeller Plaza and the 1939 World’s Fair.
