Computer Virus Brings Internet To A Halt
A significant slowdown in Internet response time began Tuesday, Sept. 18, due to a new powerful computer virus, dubbed “NIMDA.” The serious attack affected the entire global Internet community, including NJIT. During the initial attack time, network connectivity was slow for some services, and others were disconnected.
The division of computing services isolated the virus and filtered it
to keep its effect on NJIT to a minimum. Filters were put in place,
making service faster than it was for our community before the virus
first started.
The division of computing services needs the university community’s help
in building a strong defense against this virus. All NJIT community
members, including faculty, staff, students in the residence halls and
those dialing into the NJIT modem banks are strongly urged to install
and/or update their McAfee anti-virus software, provided free to the
NJIT community. For those who do not have anti-virus software installed
or it is not up-to-date, they run a strong risk of having their PC
infected, and of infecting others, which will slow down all NJIT
computers.
