Sports NotesMen's Soccer (3-8): The NJIT men's soccer team had something to celebrate after snapping a five-game losing streak with two dramatic victories. NJIT defeated Dominican (N.Y.) College, 2-1, in overtime, Tuesday, Oct. 9, before defeating Caldwell College, 3-2, on a goal with 45 seconds remaining in regulation play, Saturday, Oct. 13. The heroics came from a familiar source at the Oct. 9 game, as junior transfer Christopher Wilson kicked in the game-winner, his seventh goal of the season, with 1:27 remaining in the first overtime. Freshman Kevin Rojas-Britto scored his first collegiate goal and game-winner, Saturday, Oct. 13. Both winning goals were assisted by free kicks from Cherno Cham, who now has a team-high six assists this season. "This week (Oct. 7) was a big lift for our team," said fourth-year head coach Ricky Hill. "We've already been on the downside of a couple of games like that this year. Now we have to try to continue in the same mode and win the games left on our schedule that we're capable of winning." For More: Women's Soccer (5-8): Freshman Karina Merchan scored four goals in the game's first 29 minutes as the NJIT women's soccer team defeated the College of St. Elizabeth, 8-0, in a nonconference game, Monday, Oct. 15, at Lubetkin Field. Cathy Wasko scored a goal and set a school single-game record with four assists for NJIT. Linda Flores assisted on each of the Highlanders first three goals. Daisy Calderon made seven saves in goal to earn the shutout. Kathleen Daily had six saves for St. Elizabeth (1-8). For More: Women's Volleyball (0-18): The Highlanders lost both ends of a home Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tri-match, Sunday, Oct. 21, to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and Bloomfield College. Two NJIT players set career highs in the loss to Bloomfield. Freshman Marta Oporska had 10 kills and senior Nikeisha Joseph had 12 assists. For More: Swimming: NJIT's men's and women's swim teams began their season at the Lion Relays, hosted by The College of New Jersey, Saturday, Oct. 6.
