Nominations for the Peter Small Memorial ScholarshipPresident Fenster announced the creation of the Peter Small Memorial Scholarship in September 1980. This award provides full tuition for one year to a student of the university who exemplifies the life and service of Peter S. Small. In view of the nature of this award, it seems most appropriate that persons be nominated for consideration. Students, faculty, or any other members of the NJIT community may submit letters of nomination. Nominations should be submitted to the Office of the Provost. A committee of students, faculty, and administrators will be announced to select the winner and the award will be presented at the Fall Awards Ceremony. The principal guideline for nomination is that the recipient must exemplify the life and contributions of Peter Small. The recipient should be:
The life of Peter Small at NJIT is described below: Peter Samuel Small, one in a family of nine children, enrolled at New Jersey Institute of Technology majoring in electrical engineering the spring of 1975, at age 25. Prior to his enrollment at NJIT, Peter completed a home study course in computer programming. He worked as a computer programmer for one and a half years in his hometown of Kingston, Jamaica, saving enough money to begin his studies at NJIT.In Jamaica, Peter was active in his community. He served as a volunteer literacy teacher and was a member of a disciplinary committee for a youth football club. At NJIT, Peter became involved with helping his fellow students. His maturity and academic ability, along with a quiet yet friendly disposition, made Peter one of the ost valued tutors for the Educational Opportunity Program. Peter was also a member of the Carribean Students Organization at NJIT. He is remembered by the organization as one who provided a very positive role model and always took time to help others. After two years of study, financial hardship forced Peter to seek additional means of financing his education. He took on another tutoring job at Essex County College, as well as a job in the supply room of NJIT's electrical engineering department. Peter died May 11, 1979 while playing soccer with fellow students on the campus green. His death came at the end of a semester that saw his attempt to complete seven courses so that he could fulfill graduation requirements by summer's end. If you are aware of such a student who will be enrolled in the university next year as an undergraduate, please write a brief letter of nomination outlining some of this individual's activities and involvement and send to the president.
