DeNure NCAA Volleyball Committee's New Chairman

NJIT men's volleyball coach Dave DeNure received two prestigious honors this spring, highlighted in May when he was named chairman of the NCAA Division 1 Tournament. DeNure was named during the NCAA Tournament conducted at the University of Hawaii.

Earlier, DeNure was named Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Division 2 "Coach of the Year," for guiding NJIT to the EIVA championship.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge. It will provide me with an opportunity to do some things for the sport of volleyball," said DeNure, also an assistant director of athletics. "I'm also happy that it will increase the visibility of NJIT."

Gordon Named Volleyball All-American

Senior Wycliffe Gordon, who finished second in the nation with a .513 hitting percentage, became NJIT's first NCAA Division 1 men's volleyball All-American when the American Volleyball Coaches Association named Gordon to its second team.

Gordon is the only East Coast representative among the 18 players named to the All-American first and second teams. Earlier this season, the 6-foot-5 Gordon, from East Orange, was selected for the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association first team. He was chosen national "Player of the Week," for the week of April 5.

"This is a great honor for Wycliffe because he was truly the most dominant net player in the East,'' said coach Dave DeNure. "It is also great for NJIT's program because we are recognized by coaches around the country. Wycliffe is a very gifted player."

NJIT (17-8) played in NCAA Division 2 for the first time this season, won the EIVA Division 2 championship, and qualified for the NCAA Division 1 Tournament for the first time. NJIT had Volleyball Magazine Division 3 All-Americans in A.J. Mihalic (1997), Gordon (1996) and Tarik Rodgers (1995, Player of the Year).

'Small Business' Town Meeting Scheduled

A Congressional Small Business Electronic Town Meeting video conference, scheduled for May 29, will offer small business owners and others an opportunity to meet electronically with government officials and begin designing a comprehensive small business policy. The policy will be presented to members of Congress, the administration, regulators, state elected officials and candidates for public office. The conference can be viewed in Guttenberg Information Technologies Building 1400 during two sessions, 9-11 a.m. and 12-2 p.m.

The National Federation of Independent Business and other small business associations are producing the video conference to begin changing the way Congress, the administration and state houses handle issues of importance to small business. Topics to be covered include taxes, healthcare, legal reform and regulatory reform. The program will include pre-recorded remarks by Newt Gingrich and a former senator from Wyoming, and a video segment with members of Congress, names to be announced.

For reservations, contact Bill Duelly, Instructional Technologies and Media Services, ext. 3005.

African Scholar Exchange Program For Doctoral Students Shaping Up

NJIT and Rutgers-Newark are pursuing an African scholar exchange program in laser, atomic, molecular and optical sciences in Africa through a Joint Ph.D. in Applied Physics program between the African university and the Federated Physics Department.

Highly recommended African students would enter the NJIT/Rutgers-Newark program. Their African advisor would be a member of the thesis committee and active in the research, making several trips to Newark. To satisfy the Ph.D., the student must satisfy requirements of the African university and the Federated Physics Department doctoral programs. The exchange program is expected to expand into other areas, including undergraduate study.

The proposal has received the support of NJIT President Saul K. Fenster and provosts Gary Thomas of NJIT and Norman Samuels of Rutgers-Newark. The University of Cape Coast, Ghana, also has indicated its full support of the proposed program. An agreement is near completion with the Universite Cheik Anta Diop, Dakar, Senegal where one student already has requested an application.

Last December, laser physicists from the University of Cape Coast and Universite Cheik Anta Diop accompanied by a representative from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory visited the NJIT and Rutgers-Newark campuses. Anthony Johnson, physics department chairperson, met the African scientists when he was a lecturer and invited speaker at conferences in those countries in the early 90s. His Rutgers-Newark counterpart Earl Shaw, the Rutgers-Newark physics department chairperson, also knows the two scientists well.

The program is part of a series of activities initiated by the American Physical Society and the UNESCO Physics Action Council to promote an "academic and research association with emphasis on scientific collaboration among physicists in Africa and in industrialized countries."

Students Receive Honorable Mention In
International Math Contest

Seniors Matthew Detlet, Brandy Rapatski, and Matthew Santaiti received an honorable mention for their solution in the 14th Annual Mathematical Contest in Modeling. They submitted a solution to a problem involving the design of a flexible, reliable computer algorithm for use with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Six hundred and eighty teams from eight countries registered for the competition with the top 200 entries designated for honorable mention.

University Admissions Recognizes FANS

The Faculty Advisors to New Students (FANS) assisted the Admissions Office by contacting newly accepted students again this year. The purpose is to provide these students and their parents with firsthand information about various aspects of the "NJIT experience." This personal contact represents an essential part of the college selection process of prospective student.

The participating faculty and staff members made numerous phone calls and sent out letters throughout February, March, and April. They also attend Deans' Day where accepted freshmen have an opportunity to meet the person who may eventually be their mentor. The FANS program continues to help attract a diverse, well-qualified student population to NJIT.
