Must every student organization have an advisor?

Yes, all student clubs and organizations are required to obtain an NJIT advisor to be active.  The advisor must be a full-time faculty or staff member at NJIT.

Is my advisor required to attend my organization’s events?

Yes, all student run events (i.e. parties, dances, performances, speakers, etc.) must have a recognized NJIT faculty or staff person present during the event.  If the organization’s recognized advisor is unable to attend the event, then alternate arrangements need to be made to have a NJIT faculty or staff person present (this is usually a member of the Campus Center staff).  The Reservation Manager must be informed immediately if the organization’s advisor cannot attend the event so that alternate arrangements can be made.  Requests for an alternate advisor to cover the event are subject to review by the Campus Center staff.  The Campus Center staff may wish to meet with the advisor before the event to explain procedures address any concerns.

For all events sponsored by an academic or administrative department, the Chair or head of the department will be responsible for the logistics of the event.

What must my advisor do at the event?

Advisors are requested to notify a member of the Campus Center staff of his/her arrival at the event.  The advisor is expected to be present for the duration of the event, monitor the activities of the group, and assist with any concerns.  If a problem arises at the event, the advisor is expected to contact the Director of the Campus Center as soon as possible to inform her of the situation.  If the advisor or faculty / staff member needs to leave the event, he/she should contact Public Safety and continue to be on call at a specified location/phone number until the conclusion of the event.
