Lieutenant Colonel Marcus S. Myers
Lieutenant Colonel Marcus S. Myers is the Detachment Commander at Air Force ROTC Detachment 490, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Newark, New Jersey. In addition to cadets from NJIT, the detachment includes cadets from twelve other colleges and universities in Northern New Jersey. The detachment's cadet corps is made up of approximately 35+ students. Lt Col Myers leads a staff of two AFROTC Instructors, two non-commissioned officers, and an administrative assistant. He is responsible for recruiting cadets and evaluating their performance while enrolled in AFROTC. He also ensures cadets receive necessary academic and military training and leadership opportunities needed to prepare them to enter the Air Force as commissioned officers.
Lt Col Myers is the son of a career Air Force Officer and has lived throughout the world. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Statistics from Rutgers College, New Brunswick in 1984 where he was a cadet in Air Force ROTC Detachment 485. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force upon graduation.
Lt Col Myers entered Undergraduate Pilot Training at Williams Air Force Base, Arizona in February 1985 and graduated in January 1986. From there he went on to B-52 Training in California followed by his first duty assignment to the 596th Bombardment Squadron, Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. After upgrading to Aircraft Commander, Lt Col Myers flew his first and longest combat sortie of 35 non-stop hours in support of Operation DESERT STORM 16-17 January 1991. He deployed one week later to Moron AB, Spain and continued to fly combat missions, accumulating over 160 combat hours.
In 1992, after his initial commitment, Lt Col Myers separated from the Air Force. He worked at GEICO Corporate Headquarters in Chevy Chase Maryland and AVIS Corporation in Alexandria, Virginia.
Lt Col Myers reentered the Air Force in 1997 and was assigned to the 20th Bomb Squadron, Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. After graduation from Squadron Officer School as a Distinguished Graduate, Right of Line Flight and Chief of Staff Flight, he upgraded to B-52 Instructor Pilot and was assigned to the 11th Bomb Squadron at Barksdale where he was the Instructor Pilot Flight Commander, responsible for the training of all B-52 pilots worldwide.
In July 2001, Lt Col Myers was assigned to Air Combat Command (ACC) Headquarters, Rated Officers Assignments Branch, Langley AFB, Virginia. Immediately after 9/11 he was tasked to the Air Combat Command Crisis Action Team, where he was responsible for the mobilization of all ACC tasked reserve and guard forces. In February 2002, he deployed to U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) forward Headquarters in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM where he served as the Senior U.S. representative to the Australian Mideast Headquarters at Camp As Saliyah, Qatar. Later he was transferred to USCENTCOM rear Headquarters at MacDill AFB, Florida, where he served on the Coalition Coordination Cell as the Senior Air Officer responsible for the coordination of all Coalition Air support for the war.
His next assignment was to the Warrior Preparation Center (WPC) at Einsiedlerhof Air Station, Germany, where he served as the Director of Operations. The WPC works under the USAFE Director of Operations and is responsible for mission rehearsals, exercises and training for the United States European Command (USEUCOM) and component senior commanders and battle staffs. It also supports NATO, Partnership for Peace (PFP) and coalition components within the USEUCOM area of operations (AOR).
In July 2007, Lt Col Myers took command of AFROTC Detachment 490 at NJIT.
Lt Col Myers is a senior pilot with over 2600 hours of jet flight time including more than 160 combat hours.
