Public Service & Economic Development
NJIT is committed to public service to both its urban environment and the broader society of the state and nation through initiatives such as conducting public policy studies, making educational opportunities widely available, and initiating community-building projects.

Founded in 1881 as the Newark Technical School with the help of Newark businesses and described as "a school that would be of service of the industries of a manufacturing city, by educating those who were directly employed by those industries," NJIT's mission of public service and economic development are more important than ever.

The technological research university is a crucial component of the 21st century's global, technology-driven economy. University research programs create the technologies that translate into new industries, and their partnerships with established corporations and start-up companies speed commercialization of new products and applications and create new jobs.

NJIT contributes to the state's economic development through the state's largest business incubator system, one of the first federally-funded procurement technical assistance centers nationwide, workforce development, joint ventures with government and the business community, and through the development of intellectual property.

Some of the research done at NJIT for which there are corporate partnering opportunities include controlled drug delivery, coating techniques, glucose concentrations, fludization of nano particles, retinal imager, and self tonometer. Read more details on the Office of Technology Development website.
