Chapter 1606, Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve

Education benefit payments are made directly to the veteran student. Full-time enrollments result in the maximum amount paid.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

  • Completion of IADT (Basic Training AND Advanced Individual Training)
  • Needs 6 year contract or service obligation
  • National Guard members may be eligible to use Chapter 1606 and the NJNGTP
  • Must submit a NOBE (Notice of Basic Eligibility) to the school

How to Apply

  • Apply through Form 22-1990
  • If you are changing schools or majors, complete Form 22-1995 “Request for Change of Program or Place of Training” through


  • Provides 36 full-time months of entitlement
  • Expires 14 years from the day of eligibility.
  • Student must verify attendance last day of each month through WAVE WEB Automated Verification of Enrollment or by calling 888-442-4551

How to use the benefit at NJIT:

  1. Complete a Veterans Affairs Program Card
  2. Provide your Certificate of Eligibility (the first semester you are using benefits)
  3. Submit all items to or drop them off at the Registrar’s Office in the Student Mall
  4. Deadline to submit documents is 2 weeks prior to the start of class

**VA Benefits are paid based upon your attendance. Dropping a course or unsatisfactory attendance in class (you stop going) could result in a debt to the VA for benefits paid to you.

**Only degree pursuing courses will be certified to the VA. If it is not required, the VA will not consider the course.
