Quarantine/Isolation Period Policy
If you are in close contact with someone who has the COVID-19 virus and you are fully vaccinated, you do not need to quarantine or get a covid test unless you are experiencing symptoms.
Residents testing positive for COVID-19 will be required to self-isolate for 5-days if vaccinated, 10-days if you have an exemption. Residents who live within 50 miles of campus will be required to isolate off campus. Residents who live further than 50 miles of campus will isolate on-campus.
All residents testing positive for COVID-19 will be assigned to an isolation space in one of the residence halls. Students in single rooms may isolate in their current space. Residents with a roommate will move to an isolation space on campus.
Residents who opt to quarantine off-campus will not be permitted to return to their residence hall placement until their isolation period has expired, Residents need to be fever free without taking a fever reducing medication for 24 hours and other symptoms are resolved or improving. If a student engaged in isolation or quarantine on-campus decides to leave campus to complete the remainder of their isolation/quarantine off-campus, they are asked to notifiy Residence Life immediately so that meal delivery can be discontinued and our records adjusted accordingly.
Residence Life staff will coordinate daily meal delivery for all COVID-19 positive students in isolation whether or not they purchased a dining plan. Students without meal plans may be charged a daily rate for meals while in isolation.
The Dean of Students and Campus Life, and Facilities Services will be notified of all students placed in isolation by Residence Life.
Parental notification will take place for any impacted minor.
How will I be notified of a need to isolate?
If Residence Life is notified of a confirmed positive resident, the resident will receive an email and/or accompanying telephone call with clear instructions regarding isolation expectations.
How will meals be organized and delivered?
Residents in isolation will receive three meals (two on weekends) a day. We advise students to bring additional snacks and water to have outside of meal delivery times. Residence Life staff will deliver meals to the door and then knock to alert the student.
If a meal was not delivered or if the student has an issue with the delivered meal, please contact the building Residence Life staff, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. After hours, including 24 hours on weekends, students must contact their building’s front desk via the number provided in their isolation email and ask to speak with Residence Life staff on-call. Please see the Relevant Residence Life Contact Numbers section for additional details. Please note that residents without a meal plan may be required to pay for their meals.
Once a student completes isolation, meals will no longer be delivered.
How do students receive packages during quarantine?
Packages received will be logged by the building's Residence Life Office and then delivered to the student's isolation assignment. If one wishes to drop off items to the residence hall, prior communication to the building’s Coordinator is required.
Residence Life staff will not receive food orders delivered to the residence halls through services such as DoorDash and Uber Eats.
May I do laundry during quarantine?
No, students may not exit their isolation space to use laundry facilities.

Health Monitoring During Isolation
If a student has a fever, cough, shortness of breath, or other COVID symptoms, they should contact Health Services immediately during normal business hours (Monday-Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm). After hours or in an emergency, students can call 9-1-1 identifying NJIT as their location, or for non-urgent, after-hours health concerns call NJIT Public Safety at (973) 596-3120.
Abiding by Isolation
It takes a community effort to effectively protect each other’s health. Isolation is an essential component of safeguarding the NJIT community.
Students who break isolation may be referred to their building supervisor for a conduct meeting as the behavior goes against the Resident Contract as well as the Student Code of Conduct.
Pending the outcome, the student may need to isolate for a longer duration of time and if a pattern of behavior ensues, one’s resident contract may be terminated.
Additional questions about Isolation?
Students may direct questions to their building supervisor, or the central Residence Life office staff. Contact numbers are listed in the student’s isolation email notice.
Please note university offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. After hours, including 24 hours on weekends, students must contact their building’s front desk via the number provided in their quarantine notice and ask to speak with Residence Life staff on-call.
