Student Summit Committee

Dr. Sharon Morgan
Associate Dean of Students,
Title IX Deputy Coordinator and
Title IX Student Summit Chair

Theresa A. Bivaletz I am very proud to serve as the chairperson of the Title IX Student Summit at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). This conference begins to "break the silence' and initiates a dialog on sexual misconduct and sexual assault on college campuses. As students begin to understand their rights under the Title IX law, recognizing, reporting, and preventing Title IX violations will help make college campuses a safer place to learn and live. It is my hope that the students and professional staff attending the summit will leave inspired to continue the discussion on their campuses through facilitated discussion groups, workshops and Title IX training sessions.

Having being involved with so many student programming opportunities over the years, this is my first experience being directly involved in a student summit related to such an important topic. I feel that our conference is the perfect opportunity for students and professionals to not only gain knowledge of the subject but learn how to handle instances of Title IX violations on their own campuses. I am so excited to be involved in a dynamic conference like this as a graduate intern with NJIT!

I feel honored to be part of such an enlightening conference organized by NJIT. Title IX includes sexual rights awareness for both male and female students. It also includes discussion on gender equality, inclusion, diversity and awareness. As an international student, this is a topic which tends to be overlooked in many other cultures. The information learned from this conference is so important as it can be applied to students on a daily basis.

Many of the events at NJIT, such as research showcases and project presentations, are more academically focused. This is the first time I am seeing a Title IX focused summit. Title IX is a very important topic that students, administrators and faculty should be aware of. I am very happy to be a part of the committee to help organize this event.

Title IX, especially at an institution where a STEM education is heavily emphasized, is an important issue which has to be addressed especially because women are under-represented in STEM fields. By holding this conference, NJIT put itself on the map as being one of the most receptive and student-centered institutions in the nation. I am beyond grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of this enriching experience, helping to keep a college education a safe, positive environment for everyone.

After attending a Title IX Summit last year I knew it was a program we needed at NJIT. I hope the students take advantage of this material and become as passionate about Title IX as I have.

Title IX would be beneficial for many students who may not know about the movement. When I attended the Summit last year, I noticed how appreciative the students were because they were learning about real life events that they have witnessed or been close to our summit so they can take advantage of this knowledge.

Because NJIT is one of the most diverse and leading universities in STEM field, it is very important to enlighten students on Title IX. We don't understand the importance of something until we experience it ourselves. Discrimination is something everyone needs to be aware of, and take stand a on so that everyone feels safe and included.

Being a senior student-athlete at NJIT pursuing a degree in Biology, I feel that I have been informed and educated on my rights under Title IX because of my athletic involvement; however, what about rest of the NJIT community? Many students, especially those who dorm on campus, are unaware of what exactly Title IX is. How does having resources under Title IX benefit the NJIT community? As a committee member it is our mission to educate and inform not only students, but staff and professionals on why it is important to have Title IX programs on college campuses. I am excited and honored to be a part of NJIT’s first Title Ix Student Summit and I look forward to seeing its benefits for the future of NJIT.

I believe that this conference is not only necessary at NJIT, but also for all colleges across the nation. In regards to NJIT being a STEM school, it is known that women tend to be overlooked in the STEM career field. Not only does NJIT serve women in STEM, it also serves division 1 women athletes. This explains that Title IX must be a proactive measure and not a reactive one. The title IX conference will allow students to be certified and knowledgeable about title IX, hearing from speakers who are well versed in this subject. This conference will be an eye opening experience and a first step for many to stand up for title IX and truly understand the importance of it on college campuses.

Title IX is such an important topic that everyone needs to learn and be more aware of. Many people overlook the significance of Title IX, and it is essential for people to know that it must be addressed. I hope everyone takes advantage of this great opportunity that this summit will offer. I know it will be a great experience.

Its a great privilege to be part of the Title IX summit at NJIT, and I am looking forward to a rich educational experience. This conference gives a great opportunity for everyone to take a stance in combating sexual assault and ensuring safety on campus. NJIT!

It is my honor to be part of NJIT's Title IX Student Summit Committee. Discrimination should not be the reason why an individual can not attend college, become a CEO, or win a gold medal at the Olympics. Many people believe that Title IX is about protecting females; however it protects anyone from sex-based discrimination, no matter of their sex, gender, or sexual orientation. This is why our NJIT community needs to be informed and get involved!
