The NJIT TAB multidisciplinary team consists of highly skilled, professionals with broad and varied areas of expertise and experience.
Leadership
Dr. Jessica Miller is the Executive Director at the Center for Community Systems (CCS) at the Hillier College of Architecture and Design (HCAD) at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). She is also the Executive Director of the Environment Protection Agency’s Technical Assistance to Brownfield Communities Program (NJIT TAB) in regions 2 and 4. She brings two decades of experience in research and instructional development, project management and leadership, and providing community and digital engagement with the non-profit, academic, and government settings on diverse community, environmental, and organizational planning projects. She holds a doctoral degree in Earth and Environmental Sciences from The Graduate Center at the City University of New York.
Ms. Bruno possesses over 16 years of experience in environmental investigation, assessment, and remediation. Her responsibilities include helping communities navigate the brownfields regulatory process; interpreting technical and scientific documents to communities; conducting community workshops and webinars; creating site redevelopment strategies; providing health risk information and recommended safeguards; and developing easy-to-understand tools and guidance on technical and regulatory issues. Her previous experience at private consulting firms includes providing technical oversight of remedial investigations, development of conceptual site models, aquifer characterizations, risk assessments, investigation of new groundwater resources, and wellhead protection strategies. Cailyn holds a BS and MS in Geology, and is a New Jersey Licensed Site Remediation Professional and a New York Licensed Professional Geologist.
Dr. Sarah Heck is the Director of Sponsored Programs and Community Systems at the Center for Community Systems (CCS) within the Hillier College of Architecture and Design (HCAD) at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). She supports the EPA’s Technical Assistance to Brownfield Communities program in regions 2 and 4. Dr. Heck brings more than ten years of experience conducting applied socio-environmental research, managing grants and complex projects, and teaching in the fields of sustainability, environmental science, and urban studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Geography, Environment and Urban Studies from Temple University, an M.S. in Geosciences from Georgia State University, and a B.S. in Geography and Environmental Resources from Southern Illinois University.
