Service Learning Program
Service Learning allows students to complete a community service activity or project that is incorporated into their studies. Work experience is available for students who can register for courses that include a community service-related component and faculty monitored senior project/independent study during an academic semester.

The President's Student Service Awards recognize student volunteers for their outstanding service to the community. To qualify, you must have served 100 hours during the past year or plan to do so this year. For more information call 302.622.9107 or visit: www.student-service-awards.org

Who Can Participate:
Eligible students must be enrolled in select courses.

What Students Are Doing:
The NJIT Service Corps has developed partnerships with many non-profit agencies and identifies projects and activities that students may choose. Students may also identify their own projects or community placements.

An architecture student developed a renovation plan for a senior citizen daycare facility at New community Corporation.
Students designed and implemented needs assessment surveys for the Newark Museum and Project S.H.A.R.E.
A student interested in oral communication interviewed senior citizens who told the rich history of Newark on video.
Students trained the staff at St. Michael's Medical Center on various computer software packages.

Why Participate:
The program provides students with opportunities to be actively involved in the community, learn about community needs, develop commitments to helping others, and test academic theory in a practical manner.

How to Participate:
Students can register for courses that already include a community service component or can express an interest to their professor in incorporating a community service-related project or activity into their academic experience. An NJIT Service Corps staff member can help students locate a project or activity.
