Resources and Services

Career Advising:
Each student is assigned a career advisor based upon his/her major.  Meeting with a career advisor helps students make informed career choices and better decisions; become more aware of interests, skills, values, and personality in relationship to career and improve professional skills.

If your child needs assistance with deciding on a career, finding an internship, or searching for a job, CDS offers assistance with all of these areas, including:

  • Career Exploration Tools
  • Career Fairs
  • Experiential Education (Co-op, Internships, and Community Service Opportunities)
  • Interviewing Skills
  • Job Search Strategies
  • Managing Job Offers and Salary Negotiation
  • On-Campus Recruitment Program
  • Resume and Cover Letter Preparation
  • Self-Assessment

Students can make an appointment with their career advisor by calling our main office number 973-596-3100.  To determine your student’s career advisor you can go to Career Advisement. Career advising is available to all undergraduate and graduate students and alumni.

Workshops and Seminars:
CDS hosts numerous workshops and seminars each semester on a wide range of topics including Resume Writing, Job Search Strategies, Interviewing, and Business Etiquette.    Employers frequently visit campus for Information Sessions, Employer Panels, Resume Review, and Practice Interviews.  For additional information, please visit the CDS Events/Workshop Schedule.

Experiential Education:
One of the key factors that employers look for in entry-level hires is major-related work experience.  Students who graduate with major-related work experience typically receive more employment interviews and offers than those who graduate with no major-related work experience at all.  CDS offers many opportunities for your student to gain experience in his/her field while in school.  Programs include Cooperative Education, and Community and Public Service.  CDS also posts full-time, part-time, and general internship positions through our online job board, CDS On-Line.

Career Fairs:
CDS hosts multiple career fairs each academic year to provide students with opportunities to meet with employers for full-time, part-time, co-op, internship, and summer jobs.  Over 140 quality companies attend each fair.  Visit the career fair page for more information about upcoming and past career fairs.

On-Campus Recruiting:
On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) is a program for graduating students.  It provides your student with the opportunity to meet one-to-one with hiring employers.  During the Fall and Spring semesters, company representatives are on campus interviewing for full-time positions.  There is a 5-step process that your student must complete before participating in this program.  CDS encourages each student to begin this process early by attending the OCR Jumpstart Workshop during the spring semester prior to graduation so as to not miss out on any opportunities.  For additional information, check the On-Campus Recruiting Program Schedule.

Career Resources Center (CRC)

The Career Resource Center provides students with the opportunity to review a collection of career planning materials covering topics such as career testing, job searching, interview preparation and employer and industry trends. The CRC is located in Campbell Hall, 4th floor.  The virtual CRC is a repository of career-related information available 24/7.  Among its features is What Can I Do With a Major In... that lists NJIT's majors related job titles and industries, and helpful Web sites.
