A team of students from NJIT is halfway closer to competing in the Grand Challenge, a national race in which driverless vehicles must navigate 175 miles of daunting desert terrain. The race's sponsor, The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), contacted the students this week, telling them that a report and video they submitted on their unmanned vehicle met with the agency's stringent qualifications. A total of 95 teams were eliminated, and the NJIT team is one of 100 across the nation still in the contest. >>
A team of students from NJIT is designing a driverless vehicle that will compete in a national race in which it must navigate 175-miles of desert terrain. If the unmanned vehicle is the first to cross the finish line in a 10-hour deadline, the NJIT team will win $2 million from The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the race's sponsor. GM donated a 2000 Chevy Blazer (at left), which the students are now transforming into an unmanned robot, which they have named Optimus. Shamoon Siddiqui, the NJIT team leader, said he is confident of his team's chances. "I think we can win, but even if we don't, we are having so much fun and learning so much about technologies that, in a way, we have already won.” >>
