Chinese City Named a Sister City of Newark at NJIT Ceremony; Delegates Set Up Agreement with NJIT to Learn More of Sustainability, Solar Energy

A delegation from Ningguo in the People’s Republic of China was named a Sister City of Newark on Nov. 18, 2010 during a special visit to NJIT. Donald H. Sebastian, PhD, senior vice president for research and development, represented Newark during the later signing since city officials were unable to attend. Earlier in the day, the group toured technology laboratories at NJIT to learn more of sustainable urban living and solar energy.

Yeheskel Bar-Ness, PhD, of Marlboro, Newark College of Engineering Distinguished Professor in the electrical and computer engineering department at NJIT was selected as one of two recipients of the Communication Theory Technical Committee Service Award for 2009.

Xiangxin Meng, of Edison, a doctoral student studying chemistry with chemistry professor Somenath Mitra at NJIT, received on April 14, 2010, the second-place bronze medal for her graduate entry “Polymer Films Containing Microparticles of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients for Oral Drug Delivery” at the NJIT Dana Knox Student Research Day Showcase.

Kenneth Gethard, of Fairfield, a doctoral student in environmental science at NJIT, received the second-prize silver medal for his graduate project “Desalinations Using Carbon Nanotube Enhanced Membrane Distillation.” His advisor was Somenath Mitra. The award was presented at the annual NJIT Dana Knox Student Research Showcase held April 14, 2010.
