What Can I Do Green With a Major In?

  • Infrastructure Planning
  • Urban Systems
  • Transportation Engineering

Urban, city, and town planning is the integration of the disciplines of land use planning and transport planning, to explore a very wide range of aspects of the built and social environments of urbanized municipalities and communities.  Another key role of urban planning is urban renewal and re-generation of inner cities by adapting urban planning methods to existing cities suffering from long-term infrastructure decay.

In theory, a sustainable design can lead to the development of sustainable communities by ensuring that infrastructure knowledge makes improvements that do not deplete natural resources. Consequently the transition and mass adoption of renewable resources features heavily in sustainable infrastructures.

Transportation Engineering

Transportation engineering is the science of safe and efficient movement of people and goods (transport). It is a sub-discipline of civil engineering. The planning aspects of transport engineering relate to urban planning, and involve technical forecasting decisions and political factors. The design aspects of transport engineering include the sizing of transportation facilities (how many lanes or how much capacity the facility has), determining the materials and thickness used in pavement, designing the geometry (vertical and horizontal alignment) of the roadway (or track).

Operations and management involve traffic engineering, so that vehicles move smoothly on the road or track. Older techniques include signs, signals, markings, and tolling. Newer technologies involve intelligent transportation systems, including advanced traveler information systems (such as variable message signs), advanced traffic control systems (such as ramp meters), and vehicle infrastructure integrationHuman factors are an aspect of transport engineering, particularly concerning driver-vehicle interface and user interface of road signs, signals, and markings.

Going green involves continued development of pollution prevention, recycling, energy efficiency, and sound environmental management practices where environmental engineering and/or economic benefits are recognized without compromising roadway engineering requirements.

Green careers can be found within each of these job titles:

Civil Engineer  Permit Agent
Highway and Bridge Design Community Planner

On-Campus Interviewing ( OCI )

  • Nearly 100 companies conduct first round interviews on campus each semester (fall and spring) in our Career Development Services Office - Fenster Hall, Room 200.
  • Don't miss your chance to interview with public and private sector companies, from start up to Fortune 500, for full time, internship and co-op positions.
  • All NJIT students (undergraduate and graduate) and recent alumni (up to one year past graduation) are eligible to participate in OCI.

Getting Started: Apply To OCI

How Do I Apply To The OCI Program?
There are 3 easy steps.

  1. Activate your CDSlink account.
  2. After you are logged in, upload your one page resume and complete your profile.
  3. E-mail your career advisor to request approval using subject line “On-Campus Interviewing Activation Request”. Your career advisor will review your resume and provide feedback if needed. After your resume is approved you will be notified by email that you are activated to participate in the OCI program.

How Can I Learn More About OCI?
It is highly recommended that you attend an OCI Orientation Workshop or view the OCI Video Tutorial to learn best practices on how to successfully utilize the OCI program. (You need Adobe Reader to view the tutorial). If you have difficulties opening the tutorial please do the following:

  1. Update your Adobe Reader here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/
  2. For IE users, just right click on the tutorial link, and click on "Save link as."
  3. Save the pdf file on your computer.
  4. Locate the pdf file on your computer, and open it with "Adobe Reader."

Finding & Applying to OCI Positions

How Do I Find OCI Job Opportunities?
For a list of OCI job opportunities, please go to your CDSlink account under “OCI: On-Campus Interviews I Qualify For.” Only submit resumes to those employers in which you have a sincere interest and which you plan to interview, if selected. After you find an opportunity that fits your strengths and skills, submit your resume and any other supporting documents that are requested.

How Long Will Each OCI Job Opportunity Be Posted?
Each OCI job opportunity has a resume submission deadline, which is the date that you need to apply by. It is your responsibility to submit your resume and any other supporting documents requested to the company through CDSlink before the resume deadline. After this deadline has passed you will no longer be able to apply to the opportunity.

How Do I Know If I Have Been Selected For An OCI Interview?
Employers submit interview candidate selections one week prior to the interview date. Interview selection information can be found in CDSlink under the shortcut "OCI: Scheduled & Pending On-Campus Interviews." Additionally, only candidates selected to interview will receive an email from Casey Hennessey (sent to your NJIT email address). In this email, you will find instructions on how to sign up for an interview time. Sign up for your interview time as soon as you can to get your preferred interview time. Interview times are granted on a first come, first serve basis.

What If I Need To Cancel My OCI Interview?
Prior to the resume submission deadline you can withdraw your job application without any consequences via your CDSlink account under “OCI: On-Campus Interviews I Qualify For.” After the resume submission deadline, your resume cannot be withdrawn and cancellations are not permitted. If you fail to sign up for an interview time or miss your scheduled interview without prior communication to Casey Hennessey with an appropriate reason, your OCI account will be deactivated and you will no longer be eligible to apply to the OCI positions.

Before the Interview: Preparing For Success

How Can I Prepare For My OCI Interview?
Career Development Services has a variety of workshopsservices, and resources designed to enhance your interview skills.

Company Research: Feedback from employers has indicated that lack of company knowledge reflects negatively on a candidate and may put you at a significant disadvantage compared to other candidates who have learned about the company. Thoroughly research the company in preparation for your interview, starting with the company's website regarding:

  • Culture, mission, and values
  • Organization leaders (CEO, President, etc.)
  • Clients, products, and services
  • Recent company news

Practice Interviews: One of the best ways to prepare for a job interview is to practice your answers to the questions you're most likely to be asked. Research studies show that training, practice, and feedback are the winning combination when it comes to acing job interviews. Learn how to land the job with BigInterview’s powerful video tutorials and virtual interview practice software that help you:

  • Anticipate tough interview questions and develop compelling answers
  • Master the dreaded “Tell me about yourself”, “What are your weaknesses?” and other tricky questions
  • Develop winning examples to impress in behavioral interviews
  • Conquer interview nerves and effortlessly convey confidence and likability
  • Identify and fix your mistakes (even the ones you don’t know you’re making)

For further one-on-one assistance, consider scheduling a practice interview with your career advisor.

Can I Attend A Company Information Session?
Yes. Many companies conduct Information Sessions where recruiters provide detailed company information and you have the opportunity to ask questions. Some sessions are open to all students while others are open to selected candidates only. If you are applying to and/or are selected to interview with a company that is hosting an Information Session, it is highly recommended that you attend the session. The Information Session schedule can be found in CDSlink under “Events.”

The Day of the Interview & Beyond

When Is My OCI Interview?
The interview date can be found to the right of the posting description directly below the apply button. Before applying to the job opportunity, please confirm with your school/work schedule that you will be available for an interview on that day if selected. After you select an interview time, you will be able to view your interview date and time via your CDSlink account under “Scheduled and Pending Campus Interviews.”

Where Are The OCI Interviews Located?
All interviews will be held in Career Development Services, Fenster Hall, Room 200. Please plan to arrive at least 10 - 15 minutes early. If you are commuting to NJIT, please allow extra time for traffic and parking.

What Should I Wear To The OCI Interview?
Dress for success. Professional business attire is appropriate for all interviews (suit and dress shoes).

Should I Bring Copies Of My Resume?
Yes. Come prepared with extra copies of your resume in a folder or portfolio.

When Will I Learn The Results Of My Interview?
You will be contacted directly by the organization regarding hiring outcomes or second interviews. Each organization has a different hiring process and timeline, therefore, it is recommended that you ask about next steps at the end of every interview.

I Received A Job Offer. Now What?
Congratulations on your offer, please share this information in CDSlink under “Report your Employment/Volunteer Experiences.” Once you accept an offer, please withdraw your application from any other job opportunities and notify Casey Hennessey if you are scheduled for any upcoming interviews. For additional information regarding offers and deadlines please reference our offer guidelines.

Five Steps to a Successful Job Search

Plan Your Job Search

A plan makes your job search easier, less frustrating, and more successful. Visualize the job you want. What skills do you have? What do you enjoy doing? How can you get paid for doing it? Develop a "Job Search Planner" to translate this vision into a job search goal. Then determine a strategy or approach to reach your goal. Next, list the key steps necessary to implement your strategy. Finally, target the people to contact who can help you.

Get Organized

Use an organizer to identify the tasks discussed in "Resources," "Resumes," and "Networking" sections that are critical to getting started. Organize the tasks into a list of "things to do." Set deadlines. Then just do it!

Do Your Homework

Preparation gives you the competitive edge. A display of intimate knowledge about an industry, a company or a job is crucial to getting the job you want. It will pay dividends.

Work Hard And Smart

There is no substitute for working hard and smart. Working hard turns up unexpected opportunities. Working smart eliminates time-wasting diversions. When in doubt, act. Do something simple and then build on it.

Be Persistent

Take full responsibility for getting the job you want and never give up. One more phone call may lead to exactly the job you want.
