GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs)

What is GEAR UP?

NJIT Consortium GEAR UP/CB is a federally-funded program (GEAR UP) with a State-funded match (College Bound).of the Consortium that serves students in the greater Newark area.The program offers educational support and assistance to middle and high school students to help them prepare for and enroll in a college or university. Students participate in a six-week summer program and/or a twenty-week academic year program that includes Saturday instruction, field trips and college tours, and other support services. Participants are also offered in-school and after school tutoring during the school year at designated GEAR UP target schools.


Services We Offer

Once you apply to and enroll in GEAR UP, you will join hundreds of other NJ students who are starting the journey towards college.

As a participant in the program you will receive:


  • Academic year instruction - divided into fall and spring semesters. Consists of twenty (20) sessions after school and / or Saturdays.
  • Academic and personal counseling - individual and group sessions that assist students to achieve personal and academic growth guidance toward the selection of post secondary institutions.
  • Career orientation - expose students to a wide range of career choices
  • College admission & financial aid workshops - provide assistance to graduating seniors with the completion of federal financial forms and college admission applications.
  • Summer program - six (6) weeks of rigorous academic instruction, cultural activities and field trips.
  • Tutorial services - provide tutoring to assist students in improving academic skills.
  • PARCC, PSAT and SAT prep courses
  • Mentoring program - Mentors, who promote academic achievement, expand career and academic options, foster life skills and increase self esteem.


How Do I Qualify?

To participate in NJ GEAR UP you must:

  • Live in the city of Newark
  • Complete Program Application
  • Provide copy of latest Report Card
  • Provide letter from your school stating whether or not you are eligible for the federal/reduced lunch program               
  •  Attend one of the following Target Schools:
    • Hawkins Street School
    • Hawthorne Avenue
    • Lafayette Street
    • Luis Munoz Marin
    • Park Elementary
    • Quitman Street
    • Rafael Hernandez
    • Ridge Street
    • Sussex Avenue
    • Wilson Avenue
    • Barringer - Arts and Humanities  
    • Barringer - Academy of S.T.E.A.M
    • Central High School
    • East Side High School
  • Meet family income requirements
  • Enter the program in grades 6 through 12.

Once all documents are reviewed, a Site Director will contact you for an interview with you and your parent/guardian.


Program Cost

There is no cost to enroll in NJ GEAR UP or to attend activities.
