Creation of advanced particulate materials through engineering of particles is a major research focus of the New Jersey Center for Engineered Particulates (NJCEP).
The Center is engaged in fundamental research that combines experimental, computational and theoretical studies to achieve an understanding of the particle properties at the individual particle scale, in order to predict powder behavior at the macro-scale. As the size of particles becomes smaller and smaller, down to the nano-scale, the particle properties at the particle scale can change drastically and significantly affect the bulk properties, sometimes resulting in unique added value to the particulate materials. We call these value-added particles Engineered Particulates, which is the central focus of NJCEP.
Within this charter, we are investigating dry particle coating, in which nano or sub-micron sized particles are coated onto micron sized particles, the synthesis of nano and sub-micron particles, the mixing of different species of nano-sized particles, and the creation of nano-structured composites.
NJCEP is affiliated with the recently established NSF-ERC (National Science Foundation – Engineering Research Center), Center for Structured Organic Particulate Systems (C-SOPS). C-SOPS is a partnership between four universities, Rutgers (Lead university), Purdue, NJIT and University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, and is focused on improving the way pharmaceuticals, foods and agricultural products are manufactured.
