Policy on Vehicles

Use of NJIT vehicles by students may be authorized in connection with NJIT-sponsored activities or programs when other means of public or private transportation are unavailable. Contact the Office of Student Life at (973) 596-3693 for details of the policy and clarification of procedures.

Approval as a driver of an NJIT vehicle will require:

  • Minimum age of 18 and class standing of sophomore or above. If the vehicle is to be rented, the age restriction may be increased to 21, based on the external rental company's policy.
  • A valid United States, Canadian or International driver's license. If a vehicle accommodating more than 15 passengers is to be driven, the student driver must possess a valid New Jersey Chauffeur's license.
  • Minimum of two years of driving experience.
  • No serious moving traffic violations (normally, up to three (3) points for minor violations will be allowed) within the prior three (3) year period.
  • No record of convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances, or for reckless driving.
  • No convictions for vehicular accidents resulting in damage in excess of $500 (bodily injury or property damage).
  • Written authorization by the proposed driver allowing Public Safety to check on the student's driving record.
  • Completion of the University-sponsored Van Driving Program if the vehicle being requested is a van.
  • Submission to the Office of Student Life of a vehicle requisition and driver authorization application, both approved by Organization Advisor, at least ten (10) business days prior to the date a vehicle is needed.

For trips longer than 150 miles one way, an additional driver, or an overnight stay in the vicinity of the event is required.
