Intellectual Property and Patents

The Department of Intellectual Property and Patents (DIPP) advances research by providing NJIT’s faculty, students, and staff with the resources to protect their inventions and discoveries. The DIPP enhances research discoveries through its evaluation and protection of intellectual property created by the NJIT community.

The DIPP strives to provide complete guidance in planning an effective patent strategy. In particular, the DIPP receives and reviews invention disclosures submitted by NJIT faculty, students, and staff. Each invention disclosure is assessed by the DIPP. After evaluating the invention disclosures, the DIPP manages all aspects of patent protection, including the preparation of provisional and non-provisional patent applications on the discoveries. Although patentable inventions constitute the majority of DIPP’s responsibilities, the DIPP handles trademark and copyright issues, along with IP-related license agreements as well.
