Educational Grant Support Resource

Educational Grant Support Resource

As the need for skilled workforce in STEM and design related fields is continuously growing in the nation, federal and state funding agencies as well as foundations provide grant opportunities to support innovative initiatives resources for promoting STEM and design education in K-12 student population, recruiting undergraduate students from all sectors, and developing more opportunities for engaging undergraduate students in research in educational programs at all levels.

The Committee on Strengthening Research Experiences for Undergraduate STEM Students of the National Academies (National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Science and National Academy of Medicine) has strongly recommended strategic enhancements in external and internal resources towards addressing critical need to recruit, retain and graduate students who are well prepared to succeed in a burgeoning technological world taking leadership initiatives in the diverse society (The National Academies Press).

Though there are special grant opportunities to develop educational programs, the traditional external research funding in academia from federal agencies including NSF, NIH, DoD, and DoE can also be integrated with the targeted educational support programs involving undergraduate as well as pre-college students. These are strong motivating factors for faculty members to include undergraduate and pre-college students in research proposals as well as submit proposals for educational grants to help recruit, retain and graduate students in STEM and design related areas.

NJIT is well positioned to enhance its research enterprise and student recruitment, retention and graduation with a significant increase in funding in educational programs. A collective effort with academic colleges and departments, EOP and Center for Pre-College Programs in developing integrated proposals to support innovative efforts for enhancement of educational programs for better academic and research experience would be a strong strategic tactic to help achieve 2020 Vision goals.
