The mission for the Center for First Year Students at NJIT is to assist incoming first year and transfer students in the transition to becoming successful students. Working in partnership with faculty, academic advisors, and university staff, the Center for First Year Students seeks to enhance the retention of new students by connecting them to the university and offering academic and personal support.
Whether you're new to college or just new to NJIT, welcome to the Center for First Year Students. My office is here to help you make the successful transition to the special place that is NJIT. Whether its Connections Miniversity, our academic advising, or our partnership with the Center for Academic and Professional Enrichment (CAPE), we want to see you start your college years off on the right foot.
The Center for First Year Students supports both freshman and transfer students in the successful completion of their first year of study. Building a solid foundation during the first year is key to a successful college experience. The Center for First Year Students is committed to providing a supportive and informative environment that will connect first year and transfer students to faculty, staff, and university resources.
The Center for First Year Students is a clearinghouse for all questions and concerns new students may have about both academic and social aspects of college during the first year of study. Our staff is always willing to listen to students and offer advice on making students' first year experience successful and rewarding.
Your first year at NJIT will be filled with exciting experiences, challenges, and opportunities. During the fall semester, we will focus on your transition from high school to college and offer assistance with understanding academic policies and procedures, connect you with academic support such as tutoring and supplemental instruction. Each first year student is assigned an academic advisor from his/her major department. The academic advisors are specially selected for their understanding and sensitivity to the needs of first year students. The Center for First Year Students will also assist you in becoming involved at the university through the many clubs and organizations available to first year students.
In the spring semester, we will continue to assist in connecting you to the university both academically and socially to aid in your continued success and transition into your sophomore year.
