The concept of a fraternity is as old as our country.  Phi Beta Kappa, the first fraternity for men, was founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776.  Since that time fraternities, and later sororities, have grown and expanded to chapters in every state and parts of Canada.

Fraternities and Sororities exist as proven support networks for students as they begin this new period in their lives. They can help personalize students college experience in leading committees, managing budgets, and interacting with faculty and administrators. They will be exposed to many new experiences and challenges that will enhance their overall educational development at NJIT.

Historically, fraternities and sororities were founded upon 4 principles, or pillars, that continue to be the foundation for current national and local organizations:
