NJIT Appoints Professor Jonathan Luke Interim Dean, College of Science & Liberal Arts

NJIT has announced the appointment of Jonathan Luke to interim dean of the College of Science and Liberal Arts, effective Aug. 1, 2013.

Luke, of Warren,  joined the department of mathematical sciences in 1989 as an assistant professor, was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 1993, and to professor in 2001.   Since 2011, he has served as department chair.  Previously, Luke served on the sabbatical committee and research committee, was associate chair and associate director for the Center for Applied Mathematics and Statistics.  He has been an undergraduate advisor to many students and was program director for the M.S. Degree in Mathematical and Computational Finance.

Luke has developed and taught a number of graduate and undergraduate mathematics courses and is a past recipient of his department's teaching award for graduate instruction.  He has also received an excellence in advising award from the NJIT Student Senate.

In research, Luke has worked in areas of applied mathematics--primarily low-Reynolds number hydrodynamics (sedimentation of suspensions).  He has also focused on wave propagation (numerical methods and inverse problems) and conductive and radiative heat transfer.  His work has received support from the National Science Foundation and Office of Naval Research.  

Before joining NJIT, Luke was a post-doctoral fellow at the Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications and assistant professor in the School of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota.  He received his B.A. in physics and mathematics from Rice University and his M.S. and Ph.D. both in mathematics from New York University.
