Leonid Tsybeskov (left), chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Basil Baltzis, interim dean of Newark College of Engineering, hold the special plaque recognizing Ying Wu ’88 that was recently added to those honoring the College’s most generous supporters. Wu has pledged $1.5 million dollars to the university in recent years for scholarship assistance and for the Ying Wu Endowed Chair in Wireless Communications.
One of Wu’s main goals as chairman of China Capital Group has been to bring the benefits of advanced telecommunications technology developed in the US to the people of his native country. When Wu came to the US from China for graduate study, he had less than $30. He found a very welcoming environment at NJIT, along with the teaching assistantship he needed to complete his master’s in electrical engineering. Wu subsequently embarked on a very successful course as a technical innovator and entrepreneur in telecommunications, and he has generously acknowledged the role that NJIT and NCE have had in his success.
