You might be wondering what the builds are in front of NJIT’s College of Architecture and Design building that change every year. Second-year architecture students design and build them in collaboration with masonry journeymen. Every spring semester, second-year architecture students at the College of Architecture and Design at NJIT are assigned a studio project to design a masonry building with a specific program. This year, the project was designing a fire station in Boonton, NJ. Eight teams with color code-names produced their projects throughout the semester and built their designs with masonry journeymen over the weekend of April 12-13, immediately prior to the Jury Deliberations that took place on Monday, April 14.
The same day, winners of the Masonry Design/Build 2014 Competition were announced at the annual banquet. This year’s jury consisted of James Boland (President, International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers); Alan Chimacoff, AIA (Principal, Ikon 5 Architects); Urs Gauchat (Dean, NJIT College of Architecture and Design); Carlos Jimenez (Principal, Designer, Carlos Jimenez Studio); Michael Schmerbeck (President, Back Brook Masonry); Jay Tsai (NJSOA '07); Teaching Fellow at Yale School of Architecture); and David K. Williams, AIA (Partner, David Brody, LLP).
Taking into consideration the Architectural Idea, the Material Idea and the Fragment/Build Idea, as well as the ability to present and communicate a project well, the Jury awarded the following teams in the following categories:
First Place: Team Black
Second Place: Team Pink
Third Place: Team Blue
Best Mock-Up: Team Blue
Best Presentation: Team Green
The program, which gives the students the rare opportunity of linking their ideas with hands on experience, is sponsored by the Masonry Contractors of New Jersey in cooperation with the New Jersey Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Labor Management Committee.
For the third year, CoAD also held a People’s Choice Award on Facebook. This year, People’s Choice Awards for the Masonry Design/Build 2014 went to Team Pink. Team Black placed second and Team Red took third place in the People’s Choice Awards.
