Fifth-grade girls launch rockets as part of the FEMME aeronautical program.
Middle-school girls from throughout New Jersey got a glimpse of the fun side of science and technology through NJIT's Women in Engineering & Technology Initiative - FEMME program. Developed by the Center for Pre-College Programs, FEMME is an intensive four-week program offered in the summer to post-fourth through eighth grade girls. The program aims to enrich academic skills and promote careers in engineering, and also to enhance students' sense of efficacy in scientific, engineering and technological fields. Specially designed components introduce each grade to a different engineering specialty: fourth grade girls study environmental; fifth, aeronautical; sixth, mechanical; seventh, chemical; and eighth, biomedical engineering.
